Ménerbes
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
For five years, from 1573 to 1578, Protestants held the citadel of Ménerbes against a papal army, on a rocky spur of the Luberon between Oppède and Lacoste. The walled hilltop village later drew artists such as Dora Maar, and Peter Mayle's books made it famous in the English-speaking world. Below it, farms grow truffles, lavender and wine grapes, celebrated in the village's truffle and wine house.
