Sauveterre-de-Rouergue

Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France

Sauveterre-de-Rouergue was a royal bastide on the Ségala plateau, the 'land of a hundred valleys' cut by deep river gorges, about 30 km from Rodez. Its houses are built of local gneiss and schist under schist-slab roofs, and cutlers once worked here with water-powered grindstones, a trade that faded from the late 16th century. The Méridienne Verte line passes a few hundred metres from the village.
