Yèvre-le-Châtel
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
On the last rocky spur at the edge of the Beauce plain, Yèvre-le-Châtel held out through the Hundred Years' War when almost every stronghold north of the Loire fell, and its captain fought beside Joan of Arc to free Orléans. Philip Augustus had the castle rebuilt around 1200, and today the village is one of only two in France labelled a Jardin remarquable.
Highlights
- The castle rebuilt around 1200 with defences learned on the Crusades
- Views over the Rimarde valley from the rocky spur
- Gardens that earned the village the rare Jardin remarquable label
