St James of the Marches was born here in 1393, and part of the library he gathered survives in the town's codex museum. The walled medieval core runs along a short ridge 5 km inland from San Benedetto del Tronto, with views from the Adriatic to the Sibillini and the Gran Sasso. The saint's remains lie in the nearby sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
