Templar knights, then the Knights of St John, held this walled town of the Maestrazgo, set at 1,290 metres above deep ravines. In the Carlist wars it became the stronghold of General Ramón Cabrera, with an officers' academy and a foundry that cast the Carlist army's first cannon. Eighteenth-century wool wealth paid for the Loreto hermitage and the hospital of San Roque.
