Corot, Courbet and Harpignies were all drawn to Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei, a granite outcrop in a wooded loop of the Sarthe, and from 1875 to 1908 artists filled the Moisy sisters' inn. Stone houses step down to the river and a four-arched bridge, while the Romanesque church above keeps frescoes that lay under plaster for some two centuries.

Highlights

  • Romanesque church with 12th- and 14th-century frescoes, rediscovered after centuries
  • Auberge des Sœurs Moisy museum and its Room of the Beheaded silhouettes
  • The 15th-century chapel of Saint Céneri, alone in a riverside meadow
  • The stone bridge, where a metal screw marks Normandy's border
  • Jardins de la Mansonière, a garden open to visitors
