Razed in 1499 and rebuilt by Emperor Maximilian, the smallest town in South Tyrol still sits whole inside its walls, with three gates and seven watchtowers beside the Adige in the upper Vinschgau. Salt bound for Switzerland once made it rich. The parish church stands outside the walls, and a local saying holds that the town is so small you must leave it to go to Mass.
